Julie Plec’s latest tweet urging us to stop the wars

-facepalm-
Ok, well, her tweet was nicely articulated and has great sentiment. I appreciate her message, and I do agree that people need to stop making everything negative. People are compelled to tear down other people’s opinions so their own stands out, and that’s just shitty. Cut it out, people.
However.
Julie points out her own hypocrisy. She called someone an asshole on the internet. Not only does that do absolutely nothing, but good lord, Julie, you are a grown women running a popular TV show that kids and teens and people of various ages are seeing. You could be a role model to some people. I know that, in a way, I want to be you someday- I would LOVE to be the main writer for a TV show, that would be so amazing. If I was younger, I would have idolized you and taken your tweets to heart, and learned by example. “Oh, if Julie Plec gets to reply to everyone’s tweets and call them assholes, then I can too!”
And it’s not just that. You can just TELL that Julie has a disrespect for certain fans’ opinions. Klonnie, being a prime example. She’s tweeted about how, essentially, it doesn’t make any sense and Bonnie deserves better (don’t even get me started on her phrasing on THAT). You can’t do that, Julie. If there’s one thing I’ve learned by being a part of fandoms, it’s that everyone’s opinion matters in some way. Especially when it comes to shipping. Shipping comes from various places inside of a person, that’s why it’s so personal. It comes from how we view love, how we want to be loved, how we have experienced love, what inspires us, what we’re intrigued by, etc. etc.. For me, I pick ships based on what inspires me and what relationships I would love to see explored, because I’m a writer and I like doing some of the exploring myself. That’s personal for me. So you CANNOT belittle something like that. And Julie, even though your hits at Bamon have been, er, somewhat subtle, I know you have disdain for it. I shouldn’t be able to sense that!
(Note: I’m actually impressed she mentioned Bamon in her tweet, as the third ship listed, no less. Points to you for that, Julie.)
I know it was a joke, but Julie undermined her whole tweet by adding that thing about Eleneremy. Some people could legitimately support that, and that’s ok! If you’ve heard of Supernatural, one of the most popular ships is an incestuous one. And, it may creep some people out, but it is someone’s OPINION and if people want to express their opinion, then yes, that’s awesome and fine. You CANNOT show disdain for one pairing and then preach to show respect for all. That is hypocrisy at its finest.
One last thing- I don’t know about you guys, but I know fandoms. I know shows. I know how fans react to certain things, the patterns of behavior we follow. Julie, if you thought for ONE SECOND that a show about a LOVE TRIANGLE wasn’t going to turn ugly in terms of ship wars, then I don’t get it. Because that is absolutely a recipe for drama in a fandom, right from the get-go. Accept it. It happens. You basically made it happen. You’re writing this stuff. If anything, there are ways you can write the show to make the ship wars diminish, but, that doesn’t make for good TV. Gotta make it dramatic. It’s ok. Ship wars suck and people suck, but ship wars are a natural part of fandoms nowadays. Maybe they won’t be someday. But for now, you just gotta deal with them. It’s annoying as hell, ohhhh yeah, but I deal with them by sticking to my Bamon and Bonnie Bennett Brigade corner of the internet, where the people are perfect and the sassiness is the best.
Wow ok, I rambled forever. Just had to get that off my chest, I guess.
